EU Funded R&D Projects

QUANTOS participates in consortia that undertake Research and Development projects funded by the European Union. We continuously elaborate on innovative projects, which enhance the quality and competence of our work.

Evaluation of the scientific and technological activities in Europe through patents (STING, in IST-FP5)
The main objectives of the project include the development of enhanced methodologies for the analysis and processing of patents data, the development of a reliable, accurate way to measure technological innovation and to produce indicators on a regular basis as well as the improvement of the quality and timeliness of the produced indicators. The final product will be a computer-assisted system for the analysis of patents data. Apart from Quantos the following organizations comprise the STING consortium:

  • Computer Technology Institute (CTI)
  • Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL)
  • Hellenic Industrial Property Organization
  • Instituto Nationale di Statistica (ISTAT)
  • National Statistical Service of Greece (NSSG)

Extended Statistical Informational System (X-STATIS, in IST-FP5)
The main objective of the X-STATIS project is the development of an extended statistical information system that will assist and/or guide the non-expert users, through an interactive user-friendly interface, in order to select and apply the most appropriate data analysis method. Furthermore, it will help them proceed with interpretation of the generated results, by providing the users with sufficient information and guidance in order to evaluate and understand the outcome of the analysis. Apart from Quantos the following organizations comprise the X-STATIS consortium:
  • AtkoSoft SA
  • BVA, Institut D' Etudes De Marche et d' Opinion
  • Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (CNAM)
  • Instituto Nationale di Statistica (ISTAT)
  • National Statistical Service of Greece (NSSG)
  • The Office for National Statistics (ONS)

E - Learning : Virtual-Library for Computer Assisted Training in Statistics (VL-CATS, in IST-FP5)

VL-CATS aims to the development of a system that will offer integrated training and information services in Official statistics and Strategic management. Technologically, it is based on a groupware system that is able to provide optimum allocation and management of user roles and information material. It will be a unified development of a Virtual Library (VL) and Computer Assisted Training System (CATS). The most important element of the VL will be the course material, as it will have to elaborate on instructional issues over the Internet using advanced functionality and vocational training issues (CATS). Apart from Quantos the following organizations comprise the VL-CATS consortium:

  • Centre d'Etudes des Sciences Appliquees a la Gestion (CESAG), Universite Robert Schuman
  • Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (CNAM)
  • European Dynamics SA
  • Training of European Statisticians (TES) Institute
  • Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC)
  • University of Urbino, Faculty of Economics (ECONURB)

Other EU Research Projects

Interactive Visualization Statistical System (IViSS, in ESPRIT '98)
The goal of the IViSS project was to identify and implement visualisation techniques and data analysis methods, which would be used by an expandable and customisable statistical visualisation software environment, capable in helping the exploration of complex statistical data. Additionally, it foresees the development of a prototype that will lead to the application of an open, adjustable, homogeneous environment of original depiction, for statisticians.

Development of Statistical Informational Systems (STATIS, in SupCom '98)
The main objective of the STATIS project was the development of a statistical information system that would be capable of supplying the elements of the New-Cronos database with an automatic and standardized analysis. Moreover, a data analysis wizard was developed to help the non-statisticians. Using simple questions the needs for analysis are detected and the most appropriate methodology is selected.

Evaluation of LFS concepts (SupCom '98)
In the framework of an effort to examine whether major differences exist in the definition of unemployment between national concepts and the one adopted by the International Labour Organization (ILO), as well as if labour force surveys (LFS) based on small samples can lead to valid results, a survey was conducted in France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom.

Assessment of R&D indicators in Europe
The assessment of R&D characteristics (economic, human resources etc.) has been identified as an issue of major importance. The aim of the project was to provide methods and principles for the systematic and effective collection of data for the development of accurate and conceptually correct indicators.

Collection and grouping of statistical data on small craft enterprises (tender 99/S158-115112)
The principal aim of this project was to provide an outline for one or more courses for a methodological and operative identification of a comparative statistical system of craft trade enterprises, without overlooking the transverse nature of different economic activities. The basic principle of this project was to assess the possibility of finding a connection between the statistical sources in the involved countries. This operation is based on a theoretical set-up that studies the possibility of using the common elements found in the database on enterprises.

Network for Computer Assisted Training Systems (CATS, in SupCom '98)
CATS was related to the evaluation of the currently available products for e-learning in statistics. The objective of the study was to explore and record the characteristics of vocational training using advanced technological tools and the possible requirements of such an application in official statistics. The final milestone was a proposal for developing a relevant system in European level.

Presentation and analysis of non-numerical data (SupCom '99)
This project dealt with the evaluation of the potentials of textual analysis in the field of Official Statistics and the analysis of textual techniques. Further orientations have been the application of textual analysis techniques in EUROSTAT's environment.

Study of statistical properties of non-measurable populations (OSCE '97)
Quite often research confronts cases where the population frame cannot be identified adequately (e.g. fraud, tax evasion etc). The objective of the study was to explore the statistical properties of the ordinary estimators and examine alternative approaches.
